As a chief human resources officer, it’s my job to think about these things from an organizational perspective—and the mental health of our people has weighed heavily on my mind.

I work for Blue Shield of California Foundation, an independent, nonprofit organization that is funded entirely by contributions from Blue Shield of California. The Company gifts between $30-$40 million annually to the Foundation for grantmaking to help us achieve our Mission

At Blue Shield, I identified an executive sponsor who was receptive to the idea of bringing the children and volunteers together during lunchtime at one of our local offices. As a result, the Beyond School Walls program was born.

In that quest for balance, I didn’t realize that my experiences at Blue Shield would evolve me into the community servant I am today.

When people leave their careers in the armed forces, it can often be a difficult transition on many fronts, especially finding a suitable career. But since I started at Blue Shield in 2014, I felt like my talents and skills I’d honed in the Marines were welcomed.

It was on the day of my son’s pre-op that I went to interview at Blue Shield. That sounds crazy, I know. But I was intrigued about turning my very real and timely experience with the healthcare system into an opportunity to change it.

Working at Blue Shield has been an amazing journey so far, and one of the best things about it has been the opportunity to flex my leadership skills and pass them along to others. I also gathered some amazing experience in the Pride employee resource group.
