Our promise to our employees

We ensure competitive compensation that reflects employees' knowledge, experience, and skills.

Health benefits

Blue Shield offers a variety of health and well-being benefits to employees and their eligible dependents. From day one, you can expect comprehensive medical, prescription drug, vision, and dental benefits with coverage and costs to fit your budget, plus a wide range of doctors and hospitals.

Blue Shield offers a 4% 401(k) company match, which is immediately vested at 100%. In addition to the match program, Blue Shield has two additional 401(k) contributions after year-end; 2% for all employees hired after 2015 and up to 1% to all employees if administrative expense goals are met and must be employed the last business day of the applicable year.

Vacation, holidays, and sick leave

Blue Shield employees enjoy a generous paid time off package that includes: a minimum of 20 days paid time off per year, 11 paid holidays per year, 1 health day off per year to use for health and well-being, 4 weeks paid sabbatical after 5 years of continuous service, 12 weeks of Paid Parental Leave, and 3 weeks of Paid Caregiver Leave.

Community service time and giving programs

We provide employees with 24 hours of paid time off to volunteer with eligible nonprofit organizations each year. With our Matching Gifts Program, Blue Shield matches $1 for every $1 an employee donates to eligible nonprofits, up to $1,000 per employee per year.

Life and AD&D insurance

Blue Shield provides basic life and accidental death and dismemberment coverage (AD&D) insurance in an amount equal to 1.5 times the employee’s base annual earnings up to a maximum of $1,000,000. Blue Shield also provides business travel accident insurance for insurance coverage equal to $100,000. This benefit is payable to your beneficiaries in case of accidental death or injury while traveling on Blue Shield business. Employees may purchase additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance at an affordable group rate for themselves and their dependents.

Flexible spending accounts

Employees can use pretax dollars to pay for eligible health care expenses and dependent care expenses up to the annual IRS limits.

Adoption reimbursement and surrogacy assistance

As a progressive company, we recognize that employees choose to build their families in many ways, such as adoption. This program's purpose is to financially reimburse qualified adoption expenses incurred in connection with the adoption of an eligible child, of up to $15,950 per adoption.

Blue Shield is here to support you during life-changing events, such as building your family through surrogacy. We recognize that there are many ways to build your family and surrogacy can be very costly, so this program will offset nonmedical related surrogacy expenses. Each employee will be eligible for reimbursements of up to $25,000 (taxable), per surrogacy attempt, with a $50,000 lifetime maximum.

Back-up child and elderly care

Our Back-up Care program works through Bright Horizons with the goal of taking better care of you and your family. Employees can access benefits including 15 discounted back up annual care uses, a national network of screened in-home providers and care consultants available 24/7, virtual and in-home academic support, exclusive discounts on tutoring, and a free yearly membership to Sittercity to access an extensive database of babysitters, nanny's, elder companions, pet sitters, and housekeepers.

Health and well-being

Healthy employees

One of the ways Blue Shield supports employees is through the Healthy Employees program a comprehensive suite of programs to support health and well-being. Employees have access to many benefits, including wellness reimbursement, virtual fitness classes and cooking demos, ergonomic support, access to the Wellvolution platform, financial and mental health resources, and more.

Mental health

Being a great place to do meaningful work means providing accessible mental health benefits to our employees so they can focus on their well-being. Some resources include Magellan, BetterHelp, Headspace, Ginger, RethinkCare, Brightline, and many more.

Leave of absence

Circumstances in your life may arise when you need time away from work. Blue Shield offers employees numerous types of leave that support you and your family during these times.

Mentor/protégé program

The Blue Advisor Mentorship program is a formal, 6-month mentoring program offered enterprise-wide to employers. Program participants are supported by their managers, commit 2-4 hours per month, and have growth and advancement outlined in their Personal Development Plan (PDP).
